If you have a tripod that would be useful in this expieriment.
choose a focal range, important do not change once established
eg...50mm or higher.

1.choose a subject (flower pot) and focous in on it.(like you did on pic #1) then change aperture only. Select shallowest depth of field your lense wil go...eg...f/2.8 or more. Notice the blurr behind it?

2.Remember dont change nothing but the aperture, choose a higher d.o.f this time, say... f/8. with practice you will sucessfully notice with the first shot "less" of background (larger aperture/lower number)
second shot "more" of background (smaller aperture/higher number) got it?

good luck,and practice,practice,practice

Okay here are a couple I used the same subject as pic #1 above, only at a different angle..

Still getting the hang of a tripod, not a simple as it seems, but got it set up and all...

Okay here they are... I also took a Shallow DoF of my dog Cricket, I posted it in nature and animals...

Photo #1 is low apeture and Photo #2 is high apeture

Today I went out and tried again, this time I was able to get a shallow DoF with a aperture of f/3 and a large DoF with a aperture of f/7.1 The aperture on my camera increases as I zoom so these two pics were taken up close and personal... :o)

Here they are, all input appreciated...

Oh and just for fun, I am going to post a opposite affect, not sure how I did it, I am guessing I got to close to the subject.. But this one shows the subject blurred and the background focused..

Hey Kristi! I think you are getting it....now you know how to isolate your subject from a not so nice background. As to your last image...it wasn't because you were too close, its because your focus locked on the background instead of the foreground. Those focus points you see in the view finder? They will tell you where you are focusing, so keep an eye on them.

Kristi,

I agree with Mary, you are getting the hang of it. Just keep practicing. Practice, practice, practice. I think you did very good on the flower pot.
I realize you stated you struggled with the tripod, perhaps try again this time dont move anything(dont move angle, position or focal) but the aperture only. You did well but the expieriment is:
take the two pics. they are identical except one has shallow depth of field (blurr background) and one doesnt.
good luck. thanks for sharing, cant wait to see your next shots!

I had really terrible lighting this afternoon cause the weather didn't really want to cooperate but here are a few of my attempts. I haven't submitted them just yet, cause I'm not happy with the colours but I suppose I'm ok with the shallow vs wide DoF... I hope at least
