...until my estimated due date for my second baby!!

I know it may not seem all that relevant, but I'm extremely excited about getting to take photos of a nice squishy little newborn!!!

I didn't have my DSLR when my first baby was born and the photos I have are far from fantastic, so I am really looking forward to capturing those early days.

:) That's all :)

Oh if anyone has any tips/suggestions about newborn shots, let me know!

Congrats to you and I look forward to some shots. One rule of thumb is no/limited flash use for very small children: will scare baby, some say eye damage: don't know about that one. If you do use flash I would certainly bounce it.

Hi Jen,
All the very best for the big day. Does hubby know how to use your camera, as he can get a few shots on the day....

I will look forward to these, and many more.

Thanks Joseph for the no/little flash tip - being a bit of a newbie (ok a lot of a newbie) what do you mean by 'bouncing' the flash?

Kaye - my husband knows how to use the camera (not manually but on the semi-automatic settings) and generally has a pretty good eye for composition etc.

I can just imagine myself within hours of giving birth just dying to get the camera out and start snapping away :D

Congratulations Jen, hope all goes well on the big day. If you 'google' the tips/suggestions there are plenty of sites out there to help you. I wish I had done the same when my two boys were born - hindsight is a wonderful thing, eh? I look forward to seeing some of them.

Good luck for the big day, hope all goes well. If you have an SLR and not got a 50mm, then get one. One of the cheapest and best lenses you can get. Will help with the no flash rule by using the fast aperture of this lens. Look forward to seeing all the photos.

How exciting!! I am kind of in the same boat. I am due in a few weeks too, and I am so excited to get some newborn shots! I didn't really start learning photography until my 2 year old was starting to crawl, so I am super excited to get some of a little person that is not moving constantly. lol
Close ups with babies are so neat, and I would agree that a 50mm is going to be a great lens for it.
Congratulations, and best of blessings to you and your new little family! I am excited to see some newborn baby pics from you!

Wow, what exciting news! Congratulations! :D

Thanks Joseph for the no/little flash tip - being a bit of a newbie (ok a lot of a newbie) what do you mean by 'bouncing' the flash?

I don't think anyone's answered you yet, so here goes... "Bouncing" the flash means that if you have a flash unit that can be rotated on its head, then you can point it at a ceiling or wall - away from the subject - so that the light bounces off the surface instead of going right into their face and making it look washed out.

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you all for the good wishes - I am still here in one piece, with now 4 days til my due date!!!

Unfortunately the only lenses I have for my camera are the 2 kit lenses that came with it - I have a Canon 500D with the 55-250mm and the 18-55mm lenses. A new, high quality lens is definitely on my wishlist, but having just bought a new house and now being on a single income, it might have to wait a while!! I will certainly do the best I can with what I've got though, and I look forward to getting lots of feedback and suggestions on how to improve!

Congratulations Juli - I hope the last few weeks go well for you!! I completely know what you're saying - I bought my DSLR when my daughter was just over 12 months, but only actively started 'learning' to use it properly when I joined this course in January! So I am still very much a beginner. But surely my photos of this precious babe will have to be better than the far-from-great newborn shots on my cheap old point-and-shoot, even if I don't know how to use it in the fully manual setting yet ;) I look forward to seeing your photos too :)

Thanks again everyone,

Jen

Congratulations jen and juli. One tip re photographing newborns: As they are too young to have developed and appreciation for monetary value and bribery you will need some other methop to hold their attention. Might I suggest Apu's bottle vest. This will require the participation of your significant other.
