If that was your first time, you are coming along brilliantly! These are excellent in every sense of the word! #4 in particular looks almost professional!
The colors you get in shots will all depend on lighting. The ISO you use can also make some difference, but not as much as the quality of the light you're shooting in. I'd guess it was a partly cloudy or overcast day, or at least it looks like it. If not, maybe you weren't shooting in the middle of the day, because the light seems slightly dimmer than you'd get if the sun was out and bright. It helps here, the shadows on their eyes because of their caps aren't as pronounced. About getting more color though - if there's more light available to work with, try using just a little slower speed to let in more of the natural light. You can also play with the saturation levels in your image editor; that usually works better than contrast or highlights if you want more color. If you're using Photoshop or GIMP (and I'm sure any more-than-basic image editing software can do this too), you can actually select whether you want everything more saturated, or if you just want more saturation in the red, blue, yellow, green, etc. parts of the image. I hope you don't mind me editing one of the images, but I thought it might be nice to give a visual example. All I did was adjust the curves a bit and play around with the saturation. I upped the saturation in the red and blue parts and upped the overall saturation of the image a bit as well. I could have done something about the shadow from his cap, but I think it makes the picture more realistic and adds to its aesthetic value. All of this took well under 5 minutes, and the result is attached below.
Sorry if I overwhelmed you with info there, and especially if I just spewed stuff you already knew. Hope I helped though! :)

You are doing a wondeful job! You are coming right along with your work.
No.1 might appear to be alittle underexposed compared to rest. But all in all they look fine. I like the original of No.4 myself. IMHO
Have you changed your White balance any? Or is it on auto? just wondering.
I let others chime in, but I again think you are coming along nice.
great job!
Matt
