http://www.lensinc.net/manuals/Pentax_K1000L.pdfHere's the manual for it.First load some film in it.Then if your meters battery is working set the ASA (ISO) on the top dial.Attatch your lens, set the shutter speed to match the needle meter in the view finder, set your aperture wide open and take your first shot. After that if you want to shoot with a smaller aperture, you have to adjust your shutter speed slower accordingly.Manual focus can be tricky but rewarding.Have fun.

1)open back2)load film3)close back, make sure it latches and then take up the slack in the film by gently rewinding the rewind knob.4)set film speed to match loaded film. This is the dial marked ASA.5) Crank the film and shoot three blank frames. Note that the rewind knob is turning as you crank theadvance lever ,this tells you that the film is loaded properly.hold the camera to your eye.6)look through the viewfinder, focus on your subject by turning the knurled knob on the lens until the subject appears sharp.7)set your exposure by adjusting the shutter speed dial on the camera and the f stop controls on the lens until the needle in the viewfinder matches the shutter speed or is centered in the little brackets inside the viewfinder.8)Press the shutter release and take a picture.Repeat as necessary until all film is exposed, and all the film is used. The film advance lever will stop cranking.9)Press the tiny button on the bottom of the camera and rewind the film by cranking the rewind on the top of the camera counterclockwise until all thje film is rewound.Open the camera back and remove the film by pulling up on the rewindHere are a couple of links to help you out..en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K1000www.naturalworldphotos.com/basic_class.htmwww4.hmc.edu:8001/humanities/beckman/artclasses/camera.htm

seems odd you get a project before you know how to use a camera?load the film, set the iso, read the exposure (grey card or palm reading + 1 stop), set the exposure, focus, press the fire buttona

Action: Fast shutter speed of 1/250 f 5.6: Kids playing sportsChildren : Outdoors, 1/125 f5.6 get their eyes and handsClose-Up: Indoors by window 2-4:00. Get your girl friend and have her pose so only 3/4 of her face showsLandscape: Outdoors 1/125=1/250 f8.0-11 sun behind youClouds: Outdoors 1/250 f8Building/Structure:1/125 to 1/250 f 8 doors are very good subjectsAnimal: Puppies indoors with flash 1/60 f 5.6Informal: Friends hanging out4-5 people milling about.Check the film, it should have a ASA rating of 200. Set the dial to this ASA rating. Check the battery. Turn on the light meter, it should move the needle when you point it at a bright area. The shutter speed should always be over 1/60 unless you use a tripod. Putting in the film: The film has a "leader" piece of film coming out of it. Put the film can in the camera and put the leading edge into the slot in the right hand side. Advance the lever a little bit so you can make sure that it is properly spooling. Better to lose a shot or two at the beginning of the roll than the whole roll. Close the cover. Take a roll of pictures immediately. Use alot of shutter speeds and aperture. Write down the conditions and subject for each shot. Take the film to a 1 hour developer and get it developed. This is an older camera and may not be functioning right. Better to learn about this before you do all of your work.

Wait a minute!Your are in a photo class and they haven't taught you how to use your camera?I think either you skipped the part where they explained f/stops, shutter speeds, loading film, composing your images, using a light meter and about 50 other things necessary to use your camera successfully.Go back to your instructor and have them tell you. It's their job.
