Mark, this is absolutely fabulous. I just love it when your "Arty" mind/flair gets into action. What did you use for lighting?

Very creative Mark.......and the blue really is 'electric'? What's behind the title 'Out of the Blue'? Is it the colour you wanted to capture of maybe the style of music?

Hi Kaye and thank you very much for you comments.
My head never stops with things like this, the challenge is trying to produce what’s in my head.
You asked about the light used. I would love to say it was very technical, but the truth is
it was produced with a torch (flashlight) and a 30-second exposure.
If you want to know how to go about this just let me know.
Might be an interesting one for you to try with your flowers.
Thanks Kaye

Hi Eddie and in two words "THANK YOU".

Hi Randy, thank you very much, what a great comment…if only.

This one will not stay on the hard drive I have plans for it.
Thanks again Shirley

Hi Sandra, thank you for your comments on this one, I appreciate them.
Mark
Hi Denise, thank you very much for you comments.
What's behind the title 'Out of the Blue'? It’s the name of a song I wrote.
Thanks Denise

This is a great shot Mark. Do you play? I would love to see you do a series of different makes and colored guitars Mark. Very cool, thank for sharing.
That's a pretty serious guitar. And a serious talent that produced the image.

Mark, I thank you for your comments, and YES, I would certainly love to know more.
I am glad you did not say that the lighting was technical, as I believe that a simple light or dim light can produce amazing effects. I have used a torch before with my floral photography and it can work wonders. (The set up is the fiddly bit)! I must get better at this so the torch stays put and does not fall or move, but will master this when I have more time. I also make use of side lamps - good.
I have checked out the cube tent that you told me about a while back, but thought they were overpriced here, so have not bought one yet.
I am trying to guess, but think your clue is in the glass...
I am looking to find or buy some clear glass, and some black glass. Even stove top glass can work.
I am like you with so many ideas in my head, but at present not a lot of time to pursue these. Once I start, I can spend hours upon hours experimenting. I just love it.
I have learned so much from members such as yourself on Proud, so once I get that camera I want, hopefully I will have a reasonable knowledge of composition, etc. etc. and will then have to familiarise with the camera. This will take lots of practice. Can't wait, but the time is still not right.

Hi Joseph and thank you very much for your comments.
Yes I play…I gave up the tennis racket at about 8 for a real guitar and was taught classical.
Then in my teens I got my first electric guitar and sort of didn’t stop.
I still have my first guitar and amp…a Fender Strat and a Marshall valve amp…still sounds great.
I think that’s a good idea to do a series on them I will give it a go…
Thanks Joseph
Mark
Hi Pat and thank you very much for you comments on this one.
Yes it a pretty neat guitar…and sounds good too
Thanks Pat

Hi Kay, about the set up for this.
Black background and torch (flashlight)
The camera is put on a tripod, and focused on the guitar once focussed I flick the switch on the camera to manual focus
so that takes care of the focusing and as long as I don’t move the camera it will stay good. I preferred this way as it made it a bit easier.
I was using a cable release but the camera timer would be fine as well.
I now turn out the lights so the room is in total darkness other than the torch that is :D
I position my self so I have the cable release in one hand and the torch in the other.
I placed the torch at the neck of the guitar pointing downward over the body…
I then switch the torch off and press the shutter release, then turn the torch back on.
I held the torch at the neck position for about 2-sec and then started to move the torch
around the shape of the body in a slow and continuous movement at about a distance of 9” or so.
You may have to adjust your exposure depending on the strength of the torch used.
I used a very small pocket torch for this one and put a bit of thin blue tape over it to give it a colour cast
and exposed this one for 30 sec…and that’s it…simple but effective and open for a lot of creativity.
Thanks Kaye.
Thank you so much Mark for all this information. It is absolutely amazing what creativity can be done through simple lighting (and of course a creative mind).
As you would know, at present I am unable to get a 30 sec exposure, but will save/remember this information for when I can do this.
In the meantime, it has given me some new ideas for shots I may presently be able to create.
P.S. Whilst out yesterday, I called into a glass factory, and the guy was kind enough to cut and "give" me a sheet of gray and also plain glass. I am currently thinking of my creations I can make with these, but really need that light cube tent first.
Thanks for all your help Mark.

Hi Kaye...just to ask what exposure can you achieve…this can be done with less.

And the hits just keep on coming. Wow... how vivid AGAIN the color is against the black background. Great image.

Hi Doug and thank you for your comment on this one…
I think I will do as Joseph suggested and do a set of my guitars in this way.
Thanks again Doug

Hi Mark,
It is difficult for me trying to compare SLR settings with my camera, as I have limited manual settings.
I was playing around tonight with a flower in dim light (lamp) and overhead neon.
The settings on two shots (which appear under exposed on screen) are:
1/50 F4 ISO80 (no flash)
1/30 F4 ISO160 (no flash)
I cannot manually change exposure time, but is it possible that changing my ISO and WB settings, that this can alter exposure time?
I try to compare shots and settings, but nothing seems to give regular results.
