I just received my 2x telephoto lens for my Kodak Z612. My goal was to increase the magnification of the subject without using digital zoom. Both photos are shot a max optical zoom. To be honest, I think the shot with the lens is a bit hazy and I'm not so sure it's due to the lens so much as it is shooting through a window. :o BUT, it gets me where I want to be.
Without the lens:

There does seem to be some haze there or something. The colour seems to be drained a little too.

Well, I think I threw my money away on that 2x lens. I took the attached photo of a red-shouldered hawk this morning. It was at about 85-100 feet away on top of my bat house. The weather *is* a little hazy but nothing to cause the kind of crappy quality of this photo. I may just scrap it and use some digital zoom until I can get a GOOD lens.

Garry, I honestly think your next upgrade should be an SLR. You'll never get the clarity and sharpness of a good lens out of teleconverter. These days you can buy Nikon or Canon entry level DSLR with a kit lens (18-55mm) for around $430 - $450! Add Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro lens for about $180 and you're set.

YIKES! That's way out of my price range right now. Maybe, when I get a little extra cash. But, not right now. Looks like I'll have to be content with my Z612 and figure out a way to move closer to my subject(s).
Thanks for your input, BTW. I will definitely keep it in mind as I "shop" on eBay.

How well I know! I'll just have to start saving up. That's a lot of dosh and, bear in mind, this is not a profession... it's a HOBBY. So, I don't know if I'll be able to justify the expense. I'm experimenting with my li'l Z612 and finding things out that will produce something very close to what I desire.

I fully understand you want to keep it as a hobby Garry, but an SLR is not only for the professional. Keep at it with your Z612 and see how it goes, but at the same time, continue to save up. If at the end of the course you feel that your Z612 meets your needs then you have lost nothing, but if you feel you would like an SLR then you have saved someway towards one.
The only thing I would say with the SLR's is that if you are going out for the day with the family or whatever, then an SLR can be bulky to carry where as the smaller Digital cameras, although they may not be as good for some things, they are very good with close up to medium ranges.
You are right not to go rushing in an buying an SLR if you are not sure this is what you want, but stick with it and see how it goes.

Hi Admin
Sorry to butt in, but I picked up on the recommendation about the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro lens. This is one of the lens I have had in mind for a purchase. Do you also have a recomendation for a wide angle lens of similar calibre?
Many Thanks in advance
Jon
