Does any one have any experience with a remote. I am potentially looking at one for my Canon 400D. There seem to be 3 types, one cabled one(RS-60E3) and two wireless ones (RC1 & RC5). The two cabled ones seem to do the same thing, but you have to use it from the front of the camera, where as the cabled one enables you to use it from behind the camera.
When looking in to it, one question comes to mind, do they really make any difference? Also when looking into this 'subject' mirror lockup comes into it. Can anyone explain in laymans terms what this is and does it make a signifcant difference?
Many Thanks in advance
Jon

I have a Wired remote for my camera, I have not really used it yet but there is one thing very important to note,
If you have a wired remote, be very careful that you do not trip over the cable!!!
For this reason, I would prefer wireless but I'm not sure if they work behind the camera.
The benefits of wireless/wired remotes mean that there is no contact with the camera so the eliminates camera shake.

I have a remote control for my camera (wireless) It is just like a television remote, but tiny. I love it.

I'm about to get one. I plan on doing some extensive zoom shots and macros with the new camera so, I'll pretty much need one. See? Another plus for the new camera! My Z612 wouldn't be able to handle one.

Is it right Susan that you have to be infront of the camera to use a wireless one then?

Thats what most of them say but mine works from all directions. I just tried for you, because I didn't know for sure. Mine worked from behind, front and both sides.

I thought it should as my wireless network for my computer works from any direction as long as it is within range of the router.
Thanks for checking.
Hope that helps answer your question a little more Jon

Well I took the plunge (well not quite a plunge, more like a cautious dip in the bath with a toe!) and bought the Canon RC1 wireless adapter. I felt a bit stupid though, I got it home and could not get it to work, I read the instructions and did everything it said, then got to the bit about it needs to be in self timer mode for it to work. Just at that point, the telephone went and I was distracted. I eventually got back to testing it and assumed that I had set it. Of course I hadn't and it was still not working, so I took it back to the shop and declared that the batteries were dead or there was a fault. About 2 minutes 13 seconds later, after the assistant demonstrated how to set it up and showed it working and fled from the shop with my tail between my legs!!
Oh Well, I should be able to say goodbye to camera shake now!

Jon -
I went with a cable remote. I had read that you have to be right in front of the camera in order for the wireless to work. I have used the cable a few times and seems to work fairly well. Once the tail comes out from under you and you've had a chance to use it, let me know how it works.

Wow, it is great this remote, You can use it for immediate shutter release or a 2 second delay shutter release. It is even working from behind the camera! I can't ask for more than that. The only thing I have thought, is maybe the infrared beam is bouncing off the walls inside, and reaching the sensor on the front, I'll have to try it outside while taking a landscape shot. Will let you know....
I was also going to go for the cabled remote, but this one was cheaper (don't know why as you would have thought a wireless remote would be more expensive, but, hey, I don't make the rules!).

I, too, picked up a wired remote but then spotted this little gem:

They have them for just about any of the more popular makes/models so, I nailed one.

I too am considering the one that Gary has gone for even though I have a wireless remote on the way. I will see how mine performs first but with the one Gary has ordered you can fire the remote from anywhere around the camera which I think will be a bonus.
