I need to get a new tripod. I have one antique (very very very old metal tripod) too hard to carry with me. Weighs about 40 pounds, and then on the other hand someone bought me one, and it is cheap aluminum and plastic (DONT want to even put my camera on there) Anyone know of a decent brand that isnt sunpak? It is not sturdy at all.

You can pick up a really good deal on eBay through them. I've purchase tripod legs, a ball tripod head and a gadget bag through them and I'm VERY please with all.

Hi Lensbaby

Whenever you see the articles in the magazines, the pros all seem to carry Manfrotto or Gitzo. However there is probably a higher price on these! In Digital Photo Magazine, the Manfrotto 190XPROB won the Best Accessory in the Gear of the Year awards. I have also seen an advert in Practical photography magazine (amongst others) for Manfrotto tripods, Kit 1 consists of a 190XDB tripod + 390RC2 head, should be £140, now £99. Kit 2 consists of a 055XB tripod, 804RC2 head and 102 carry strap, should be £210, now £149. Not sure if that helps at all.

Nice post Jon.

I'm not sure what my tripod is called Susan but when I next get it out, I'll have a look. It is very sturdy but also light.

Hi Sue,
Soooo Sorry for the long delay in my reply to you. I did mean to reply sooner but just have not had chance to get my tripod out.

Anyway, here goes,
I have two tripods, the first and Main use tripod is one which I had from a company here in the uk called www.7dayshop.com This is a very sturdy tripod but the only name it has wrote on the tripod is 7dayshop no model numbers etc.

The second tripod, and one that I would not recommend at all, is a samsonite one. It feels cheap, it looks cheap and as it was free with my lens kit it was cheap!

However, not feeling too well yesterday, I did not want to go to the car to get my other tripod out and I wanted to try a few pictures indoors, so I got this tripod out, it was the first time I had used it. I was not overly impressed with the feel of it but I thought it may be alright.

Anyway, I put my camera on it and then went to ajust the height to take my photo and to my shock, the head flerted to the side and the camera fell off the tripod :eek:

Thankfully, I was inside, and I do not appear to have done any damage to the camera but it could have been sooooo much worse.

I do not think I will be using that tripod again for my camera.

I'm not sure if yo can order from 7dayshop in the us, but for anyone in the uk considering a new tripod, I would recommend they have a look there.
