There are many different ways to colorize a photo, but this is just the basic for a photo that is already black and white.
Here it is (for photoshop)

1) click Image -> Mode->RGB color
*the coor mode changes, but the image on the screen does not

2)Click the new layer Icon in the layers palette.

3) Click the layer blend mode up down arrow and click SOFT LIGHT

4)Click the lasso tool

5)Click and draw around an area to make a selection

6) Click in the Foreground color in the toolbar

THE COLOR PICKER dialog box appears

7) Click and drag the color slider to select a color range

8) Click in the color preview box to select a color

9) Click OK to close the dialog

10)Press B to select the brush tool

11)Click in the brush thumbnail in the Options bar to open the brush picker

12) Click a soft edged brush

13) Paint over the selected areas to apply the color

14) click the opacity arrow

15) drag the opacity slider for the layer to adjust the color

16) Repeat steps 2 to 15 until the entire image in painted.

If you need help just let me know! Its fun once you do it.

Ok Andy.... Like I said there are so many ways to do this. There are easier ways as well. I had fun doing it this way. Also if you have a color photo you can add a new layer make it say b&w or sepia ....erase where you want the color (merge them) there is a little more to it than that. Let me know if you want to know

Thanks for this! I have been trying to find out for so long and was too afraid to ask in some of those technical forums. I will have to go try it and show you how it turns out.
