View Full Version : Compressing vs resizing

Is there any difference between compressing an image and resizing? The reason I ask is that with my 6mp camera I used to compress the images to make them smaller and there was no real noticable loss of image quality but with the 5D when I compress the image to fit the guideline size the image suffers badly and doesn't look nearly as good as the full sized image. Will simply resizing be better or is it the same thing as compressing?

I would resize the image, it will look a lot better. Will leave explaination to someone that can explain better then I can :)

Thanks Craig. I was going to post some images up last night but they looked so crappy after I compressed them I didn't bother :(

Hi Lisa,
Here is an article I read on this very subject. Hopefully this will help you.

Hi Lisa,
I upload some of my shots to Photobucket (free version). They just wrote back to me, as I asked them why my photos look fuzzy when I upload to Proud.
They actually compress the shots I upload, so compression for me is a no no.

Hi Lisa, I thought would do up a demo of compression verses resizing only. Hopefully it helps answer your question. As Kaye has mentioned about Photobucket (free version) sites often do their own compression on images uploaded which further deteriates image quality.
Cheers.
Oops better add link for you to view.

Craig, I am curious about "wetpaint" without doing much research. Does this cost for the site?

Hi Kaye,
It is free, though can pay to be rid of advertising etc. It says limited to photos I think around 600 or 800 for uploading but I find can upload images up to around 1280 wide etc.

One can also utilize Flickr and create a free account. I know there are some limitations on the number of photos that can be submitted daily or monthly unless one upgrades to a pro account (not expensive). It also allows the photo to be viewed in several different sizes ranging from small to original. The user can also disable downloading of their images. Don't know what it would do to the image if uploaded to Proud, but it may be worth a look.
Eddie, I had thought about this, so thanks for the reminder.
I did try to open an account with Flickr not long ago and seemed to end up with some spam site. I haven't tried again since, but am certainly not happy with Photobucket, as it is no good uploading compressed pics that are not clear.
I would really like the "correct link" for Flickr if I am to try again. If someone knows the real link, I would appreciate it.

I normally just type in flickr.com which ends up bringing up http://www.flickr.com/ hope that helps. It's the one thing I like about deviantart.com where I normally have all my photos can upload full size photos up to approx 30mb each photo. But lately just been uploading direct to facebook since it does it all when uploading.
