I'm in the process of deciding what speed light to get and was wondering whether you can use a soft box on a speed light?
Many thanks

As you may know, speedlights are just not as powerful as studio lights, but yes you can use softboxes with speedlights, however, you can get best results by getting softboxes made for speedlights.
Models like the Lastolite EZbox and Apollo softboxes are just awesome. I own all 3 and each has a very specific time and place for use.
Images of the 28" and 50" softboxes by Apollo can be seen HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jerryph/sets/72157616082023828/with/3394856301/).
The Lastolite EZBox is smaller at 24" but a little tougher and easier to use outside, but the light it puts out is very nice as this photo shows:

This photo was done with a 28" Apollo softbox:

That said, do not discount a simple umbrella. I use umbrellas more than I do the softboxes, thanks to their quality of light, versatility and ease of portability. :)
