I'm happy to announce that our POTM Competition for January 2008 is now on!
So let's start the ball rolling, send your nominations in now and start voting! Read the Rules before posting, please.
The photos are not to be sent into the forum this time, but in the special gallery folder created for it. It's all in the Rules :).
As always, all your suggestions, questions, complaints are welcome.

Many thanks Admin for getting this up and running, I am looking forward to the challenge!
One question, if I may be so bold, the January competition is now on, is there a particular theme for January or can the 'subject' be anything?
Many thanks
Jon

Jon, the January competition is subject free just to get it a good kick start. So any subject is welcome, you'll be judged purely on the impressions your photos make. Next month's POTM subject will be selected well before the end of January.

What is the closing date for entries into this competition?

The closing date is January 31, 2008. Voting closes 7 days after the closing date and the winner will be announced 7 days later. So January POTM winner will be known by the mid February and so on. I'm going to put this information in rules as well.

Hello:),
I'm new to this whole thing so my only question is does the picture I post have to be something I've taken since I started this class or can it be a prior photo?
Thanks,
Jollie1

Jollie -
It doesn't say in the rules when the picture could be taken. Admin pops in and if they see this, I'm sure someone will have an answer.

Hi Jollie1, no, there are no restrictions on when the photo must have been taken. The only requirement is it must be yours. Not all our members have enrolled in the course, the competition is open for everyone.

Thank you DKIPPEN & ADMIN for the responses. One more question does it matter if the photo has been taken into a "digital darkroom", or should it be untouched? Better yet where can I find the rules for the competition?

I'm all for editing photo's myself, but in a contest like this I would think only general editing should be allowed. Like croping and maybe exposure, otherwise it turns into who can manipulate a photo better, instead of who can take a better initial photograph. None of the photo's in Jan's contest seem to be overly edited and that's great. Maybe in time, a second contest came be started where there are no editing rules. That would be fun too for those that like to work thier pictures.
This is just my opinion only. I will still enter when I can.

I tend to agree with you there Joseph, This subject ( the use of PP for digital images) hs been discussed a few times and I'm sure will be discussed again many times.

I love Photoshop, but don't use it very often. I did a few months ago when I didn't realize my sensor was dirty. Took some shots that turned out very well except for the spots of dirt on them. Was able to clean them up nicely. And I love photo's that are heavily changed by talented folks out there.
But for a contest targeted mostly at people in the early learning stages of photography, I think it would be better to showcase what they can get the camera to do, not the computer.
