Please forgive how large the images are showing up as. First time I have tried posting them this way. I thought it would be easier to follow the progression of trials without having to go back and forth between the post and the images in the viewer.
The other day my oldest son was reading about the early days of photography and wanted to know if we could make a pinhole camera. I told him that he already had the camera, we just had to make a pinhole lens. So we set out with a spare body cap and forged on ahead. It does bring out how much I have to clean his sensor today though :). Not very good, but interesting so far. He thought it was cool that you could take a photo without a single lens in front of the camera, just a tiny hole in something in front of the camera body.
Round One: Proved the concept was good, but implementation was lacking. This is just the body cap with a 1/32" hole drilled in the "center", I put center in quotations because as you can see, I didn't hit dead center and we ended up with weird vignetting and very blurry. The cap is too thick and the hole too large.

Round Two: Centered, but hole is too big so it is very soft. Drilled a 1/4" hole in the center of the cap, and used electrical tape to hold a small piece of aluminum foil over the hole light-tight on the inside. Poked a sewing needle through the center of the foil to make the lens.

Round Three: Centered, but still a touch too big. Getting closer though. replaced foil with a new piece and poked the tip of the needle through about 3/4 of the way.

We'll work on it over the next week or so to see if we can come up with a much sharper image through size of the hole, and maybe changing the position of the foil closer or further from the sensor.
