View Full Version : Friendly Cockateil
A shot of my daughter's pet Cockateil today. She came to pick it up after a week away. I took this shot just before she left.
The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), also known as the Quarrion and the Weiro, is the smallest cockatoo endemic to Australia. They are prized as a household pet and companion parrot throughout the world and are relatively easy to breed. As a caged bird, cockatiels are second in popularity only to the Budgerigar.

Nice portrait Kaye. Love the colours and the DoF. Did you take care of it for a week?

I appreciate your kind comment thank you Tenny.
My aim in this shot was a very shallow DOF. And birds/animals are easier than people, I think mainly because they do not know they are having their photo taken and are completely natural.
Yes, we took care of it for a week. It liked to hop around the house. We also have some budgies in an aviary in the backyard.

Thanks for having a look Delboy and for your comment.
As I said to Tenny, I did aim for a shallow DOF, but it was fairly bright but I did not mind the light background.
Here is a crop view of my above shot. I felt my initial shot was a little too bright, so used Curves and Levels, and cropped a little:

Great photo Kaye, nice and sharp and the eye is showing some nice reflections of what I assume is you taking the picture!
The cropped photo does look better with regards to the brightness, I have to agree that the first was a bit bright particularly in the background. You've framed him nicely, but I think it's a slight shame you've cut off his amazing hair do. :P But that's just my personal opinion. :)

Thanks very much Mel for viewing these and for your comment. The reflection on the right in the eye is a tall guy (my daughter's boyfriend)... the bird was perched on his finger. I think I may be the sort of black blur in the front of the eye reflection !
I must agree about the brightness, but the first shot was really more real. Wanting a nice wishy-washy DOF, I had to move around lots to avoid the super glary white reflections that happen late afternoon.
I did find it hard to crop him closer and not lose his hairdo :D

Marianne, thank you very much. My daughter named him Kev, but whilst we were minding him, I did some google research, and believe Kev is a girl. I guess the bird will not mind :)
