Reading the reviews about my Oly, one would think this camera is "a tad above ok" but certainly nothing to take seriously. And, granted, I leaped before I really looked because I saw RAW and 18X and a few other things my old prosumer didn't/couldn't do. However, I came across these shots on another forum. Taken by a guy in NZ with a 550UZ and a teleconverter. His shots (not just these) with this camera have validated my decision. Have a look:

Gary, in my opinion you can not go wrong with an Olympus. My second digital was an Olympus C300Z and it took awesome pictures. My daughter has it now and she loves it. The only reason I gave it up and went with the dslr was due to the lag time between shots. I wanted to snap much quicker than it would let me. I always felt like I missed out on a lot of good shots because I had to wait on the camera to catch up. But, picture quality was awesome!
I love moon shots and these are good. I guess I'm going to have to invest in one of those teleconverters too. I can see my 'hobby' is turning into an expensive but enjoyable one.

I'm finding that out, Mary. As was pointed out in a few threads (one by Susan), the camera snobs out there tend to look down their collective noses at anything THEY feel doesn't meet up to THEIR standards and tend to look at one or two "snapshots" (without ever having tried the camera for themselves!) and judge an entire camera manufacturer by what some 6-year-old took with his mommy's camera! Then, you get some dope like me that reads their comments and takes their inane and totally off-base judgement as gospel. I'm learning to just stay OFF the forums that have those nit-picking camera snobs. Or, at best, just look at the captures folks post to get ideas and skip over their "judgements" on whether a camera or photo measures up to THEIR standards. If someone has a genuine comment on how to actually improve upon what the photographer has, that's fine. But, let's not get into the "that stinks because your camera is a piece of skubala". That sort of stuff does nothing but create animosity and won't help anyone. That's why I like this forum. We don't have that here... yet. Hope we never do. DPR and a few others sure do. I hesitate to even post anything there for fear of ridicule (which has already happened) so I mainly lurk anymore.

I went from a Sony P&S to a DSLR for the same reason as Mary, I got tired of missing the shots. The camera took very good pictures, but moving shots were difficult. I lurk on a couple of other photo forums, including DP and Fred Miranda. True - they get very technical and very opinionated. But someone once said and I try to live by this now:
No matter the brand or price of the camera, the ultimate result will be based on the photographer and his/her skills. If you don't have the skills, the best camera in the world will not improve the final result.
I enjoy shooting for fun - there a lot of skills I would like to improve on, but I can only take one at a time.
And that's all I have to say on that!!:D:D

Gary I will tell you one thing My Olympus p&s camera was AWESOME. I loved it. I would still be using it if I could have taken photos a lot faster. I can say this....my Olympus (sp350) took better photos than some DSLRS that I have played around with. I loved it and used it all of the time. And like we said before a camera can take awesome photos but if the person working the camera doesnt know how to work it or doesnt know anything about photography....that camera isnt any good to them anyway. I know what you mean about the photography boards...this one is so nice because everyone shares and gives ideas, but doesnt judge you because you dont have the most expensive NIKON or CANON. I did find an interesting article and I am going to go look for it again right now. Did you know that Sony makes some of Nikons sensors? HAHHAHAHAHA yet Ive seen posts putting down Sonys cameras. Guess they should do a little research!! Ok now ya got me started.haha
