Well, It finally stopped raining today and so I managed to venture out and try my hand at Assignment 4.
It was rather cold but I managed to spend quite a bit of time out there.
The reason for the title of this post was because I was unsucessful with my Assignment but I did get some reasonable shots.
The first picture, is of Sir Stanly Matthews, Or rather the bronze statue that now sits at the Stoke City Football club.
The Second Photo is taken from the Statium looking out across the A50 a local Main Route.
Comments welcome

Andy -
The statue looks dark, but a great subject. I like the motion of the second picture.

Hi, Andy! I'm with Debbie on the first one. Have you begun Scott Kelby's book yet? Take a look on page 85. I did that with your shot. Rule of thirds and using big, long building as the horizon (kind of). I think it MAY be a tad pixelated now but, I just tried it to illustrate a "fake panorama", as Scott Kelby calls it. I also ran Gimp's auto-WB and a little USM. Hope ya don't mind. :)

I have started the book but only done chaper one yet. I'm a slow reader!
I don't mind your tinkering at all. I actually prefer your shot. Nice.

I'm a slow-comprehender-put-it-into-action'er heheheh... But, that book and looking at others examples fired me up to experiment (play). I was stuck in the "film" mode for a while, too. You know... "make sure this shot counts because developing film is expensive and we won't know what this looks like and if doesn't come out right with ONE shot, we'll never get another chance." I shoot 10-20 shots of a single subject -- slightly different angles, lighting, positioning, yadda yadda yadda... IE - with that wizard I almost filled the 2 gig card. After the d/l into a directory... formatted the card and started again with the feathers. My wife thinks I'm truly whacked out... but, what does she know? heheheh http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k119/gjtoth/emoti_51.gif

I was playing about with Gimp yesterday (Thanks Gary :)) I was trying to get the footballers a little clearer, here is what I came up with, I quite like the effect myself.

To be honest Debbie, I am not entirly sure. I was playing about with Gimp. I altered the colours so to make the statues lighter and then I selected the sky which was a none descript colour and changed it to black by using the fill bucket, but as you can see, certain parts of the sky didnt fill. It gave quite a nice effect at the sides.
It is a great program to play around with.

Hey, Andy...I like what you did to this. I'm with the rest the original was a bit too dark in the face...maybe fill flash would have helped that? But, I do like what you took it to in this image. And I really like the way you made the fence/whatever behind the feet look cool! I like it a lot.

:D I have to comment again...I like this so much. To me, you made these 'boys' look like they were really playing and then got 'froze' in time. Too cool...I keep going back and looking at it.

Thanks Mary for the comments, I was really pleased with the result even though some of it was accidental.
The fence you mention, was the top of the staidium where the statue is.

Oh and by the way, the statue is of Sir Stanley Matthews, a local football (soccer) hero. It is a series of images of the same man playing apparently.
