With my point and shoot camera I saw this pretty little butterfly. She was very shy and wouldn't let me get too close, but I got a shot or two any way.

Very nice shot Marianne. I like the composition and the colours. Nice DoF too. You said that it's taken with PS? What setting was it? Well done.

Just a nice pic Marianne.
Sometimes zooming in close to see the details robs the content/composition.
It also looks nice as a tall vertical crop just left of the tree - the tree tends to draw the eye ..... IMO
I am a little ashamed to say in past years I collected mounted Butterflies and have about 40 on my walls. Don't think I ever saw one with that color combination though .... nice one!
Hi Marianne,
I really like your butterfly. It has lovely colours and patterns, and the detail you have captured is pretty good from that distance. Very nice. (Andy will be happy you posted it too).
I do also agree with what John has said above, that not all need to be macro (which I love also).... but beautiful shots can be taken from a distance allowing a different composition. I must also think of this more often.

Yes I am happy that you posted it, this is a really nice shot, sure it isn't Macro, but what it gives is the surroundings that the butterfly lives in; well seen, well captured, with a great POV and bokeh. As you say this little lady was shy and you got the shot, thanks for posting and sharing this with us.

Thank you all for your comments. I have been so interested in close ups that I nearly forgot about capturing the natural environment sometimes too. Thanks for pointing it out, John. The setting I used on my nikon cool I'd s52 was the little close up setting. Not sure what the exif is but will look it up on computer and post later.

Hi Marianne nice capture. These insects don't wait around for us to get shots of them so you did really well. I like your composition with the DOF and leaves almost framing the butterfly.
