After looking at close to 200+ pictures taken this weekend, here is one picture I used to try three different techniques. Opinions/comments welcome.

You knew I would like this, didn't you! :) and my favorite is the B/W...I think its perfect...not sure about the third one...I kind of like the effect around the trees, gives it a snowy look but I don't like the black blobs on the barn/building or trees. Did you shoot this in color and then PP it to B/W or did you shoot it in B/W?

Debbie, I, like Mary, like 1 & 2. I'm not wild about spots on anything but leopards :D
After converting over 200 slides (with about 350 to go!) to digital, I'm beginning to develop a liking for B&W. It definitely has it's place. Some of the slides have degraded to reds and pinks and are irretrievably lost to all but conversion to B&W. Remarkably, they seem to come back to life through the process. I've made a few B&W just to see how they'd look. Of course, if they stink in B&W, I just "undo" -- no harm done.

Mary and Gary -
This was shot in B&W then converted to color in Photoshop. The last picture is a sketch effect that I was playing around with. The picture itself I posted on a Canon Rebel board that has weekly assignments and this week is abandoned buildings - I ended up posting the color one.
I of course have many more shots to go through and then decide which ones to post.

I really like the 2nd shot, the first one is good, but lacks the character of the black and white, and like Mary & Gary I am not sure about the 3rd one. There is something about black & white that really adds something to a picture.
Great looking barn, I would love to find interesting buildings like that, oh well, I must keep looking!

I have about 20 shots of this barn at different angles and views. This is one of my favorite views and I have more to go.

I like the 2nd one, but do not like the 3rd one. The effect around the trees detracts from the picture I think.

Thank you Andy - the third one was just playing around with a Photoshop action. That one has since be sent to the recycle bin.

Did you learn any other great tips on your B&W weekend?

Andy -
The most exciting thing I learned is that with digital cameras, you don't need the filters. Shoot in color, then convert in PP. Also, with my particular camera, there are filter settings built in if you do want to shoot in B&W.
If you do choose to use filters, use red, yellow and green. The red will act as your polarizer, the yellow whitens the clouds and the green will brighten the greens.
I'm going out again tomorrow with the same instructor. We were hoping to go to a hot air balloon festival, but it's too cloudy.

Wow, I hope the cloud clears for you, there would be some great shots to be had there.

Andy -
Didn't make it for the hot air balloons, too gray and cloudy, but I did get out yesterday to try panning and then today to a couple more farms. Pics later this week.

Sorry to hear that Debbie. I'm sure there will be other opportunities though.
