Can anyone help please. I have a photo that I have converted to B&W. I want to add text to this but in colour. I have tried layers, direct text and other methods but each time my text turns B&W as well. Does anyone know how to do this. I use CS5. Thanks ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi Shirley,
When I read your post, I quickly converted a shot into B&W in CS5.
I just did the norm and went into text and made the colour red, and my text turned out red on the B&W image.

Are you positive that you have flattened your image... or put text in the right layer? I am sure you have done this before, so the only other thing I can think of is if you did some unusual edit to your image, you may need to rasterize it first.
Let me know how you go.

Shirley,

I use PSE8 which has many of the same tools as it's big brother, Photoshop. Like Kaye, I gave I a try. I converted an image to B/W then used my Brush Tool with signature and chose a bright pink font. I am attaching just to show you. (I also added a text box in color but deleted it. It was in color, tho!)

Hi Kaye & Marianne Thanks for your replies and I just don't understand what is happening with my photo. I converted to B&W in RAW & wonder if that is the problem. I even tried saving the image as a Jpg & then reopened in CS5 but notice that the colour foreground/background boxes changed from the red chose to grey when I opened the image. It is almost as if the B&W image settings are overwriting everything else. I am going to attach my image and would be grateful if you try in your software. This is driving me crazy. i have spent ages on something that i thought should be easy. I even tried making a separate image with the writing and dragging it over but it changed to B&W on transfer!!! thanks help, appreciated.

Hi Shirley,
Sorry to say I tried many things from rasterizing to saving in different formats, edit and fill, paint bucket, but they all just wanted to be shades of B&W! I have opened a white background image and typed red text, then moved the text to your rose shot, but it is still shows as B&W on your rose shot
I did not try saving to PDF, but I don't think this will make any difference either.

Did you do anything different in your editing like converting to a Smart Object... or 3D layer?

Also, the photo of mine I tried it on was a Jpeg. You may perhaps be correct in thinking it has something to do with converting to B&W in RAW. In this instance, you could always go back to your colour RAW and save in colour Jpeg, then convert to B&W in Photoshop. Worth a try if you haven't already done so.

If this doesn't work, then I think we need an expert on this.

I think your problem is you need to set it back to RGB.

Try this:

Image > Mode > RGB Color
