Gary said it right....slow shutter speed of 10 seconds. I walked in front of the camera about 3 times and not once was I 'in' the exposure except for a little bit of my shadow on the left side.
This part of the assignment intrigued me the most...I was in awe that I could remove something that I didn't want in the picture. Course it has to be moving but....at least I know it can be done.

I am jealous as hell. Finally managed to get out yesterday (monsoonal rain is my excuse for not committing to my photography)
So for today's giggle, have a look at my dismal attempt at panning x 3. Back to the drawing board in a couple of day's time. I promise.
The ghosting exercise x 2, was not too bad, but not perfect either. It was a very busy evening and about 20 people walked by.
Back to swatting. :o

perfectoarts,
Nice ghosts.
As far as the panning goes: my guess is you panned too fast or slow for the speed of the car, or your shutter speed was to slow for the subject. What was your shutter speed?

You did good with the ghost..my thinking about the panning...you were too close to the cars. I was a good 50 yards back from the road. I finished the last assignment tonight...got the car in motion with the background clear..

I don't think he was too close period, but too close for the shutter speed. I'm guessing here, but I would think the closer you get to your moving subject, the faster the shutter speed should be, because your camera has to move so much faster. So Mary was right that you were too close to the car given the shutter speed you had set.
If you are going to try panning in the same spot, speed up the shutter.

No pics for me either Debbie. I drove to Minneapolis twice today to shoot the stone arch bridge and Minneapolis skyline. The morning was a bust cause to was too foggie, and tonight was a bust cause It was too darn cold and windy, plus even though it was clear, the skyline was too misty with moisture. All I got was a frozen face, a runny nose, and stepped in some fresh dog poo. MAN, WHEN IS IT GOING TO WARM UP IS THIS FROZEN TUNDRA?

Joseph -
I was at Stone Arch last week, then downtown. I finished processing those pictures yesterday. I was out today shooting at a couple of farms, then came home and bought a new computer because the other one is a piece of you know what. Earlier today wasn't too bad. I was going to go to Hudson yesterday for the hot air balloons, but too gray and overcast. Haven't seen the weather report, but I think we're supposed to get snow tonite into tomorrow morning, just in time for rush hour.

In case there are any software junkies out there that don't use a backup program, I would highly suggest Genie Backup Manager. I've used many different ones in the past, but this one is the best ever. Do a search if you don't use a any now. You can try it free. That's been a Missouri byline since I was a kid...and it's definitely true around here. We were SUPPOSE to get up in the 40's today with ONLY rain that might, and it was a small might, change over to snow by Monday morning but would change back to rain once the temps started warming back up on Monday...well...let me tell you...we have not seen any rain today but the flakes were the size of a quarter and we had 4 inches on the ground in less than 2 hours...Unreal! We had just got rid of most of the snow we'd accumulated since Nov.

These are great Ingrid. I especially like the one with the cars passing each other. Why are they on the wrong sides of the road. :-)hehe
When we went to Chicago during all the flooding a few weeks ago, and some of the interstates were detoured, we sat in traffic for hours. I had lots of time to take my camera out and work on my panning from the opposite side traffic that seemed to be flowing better than us.
Great work.

Andy, yes I recall your photo. You are right, there are some strange people in this world.
This woman demanded to know what I was doing and yelled at me how disconcerting it was to have her photo taken. I tried to explain, but she was not a cookie to be reckoned with. The odd thing is that I will probably bump into her in the supermarket.
Mind you while I was standing there photographing, one of the men from the houses behind me also came out. Once his curiosity was satisfied, he was gracious enough to point out a dead flying fox in the power lines above for me to photograph.
Now which of the photos is the most correct for the panning exercise?

Ingrid, I think these are ALL great examples of the assignment. You showed motion and that is what it was all about. That rude woman lives a very sad life. I don't understand people. If she didn't want her picture taken, why did she come back and raise a scene. She just brought more attention to herself than she would have had she just drove on through. We wouldn't even have noticed her in the car. Too funny. It's no wonder this world is getting scarier and more dangerous by the minute. Too many folks like her!

Slow your shutter speed down. You want a slower shutter so the background blurs, while keeping the subject somewhat sharp. I believe I was using around 1/60 or so. Try different speeds to get the look you what.

I had someone turn around while I was doing mine. All I could think of was great...these people are having an affair, and think that someone is watching them. lol
haha... well that's part of the challenge of playing with cameras. Especially now with the sometimes rampant paranoia and all. I've not had this happen to me yet, and I've pushed it a little to see what happens. Trying to experiment and see what my local public feels is someone going too far. I think about the farthest I've pushed it is taking a photo of a very stressed out bride that I caught while she was preparing to do a photo session... and hubby nowhere to be seen. I've not seen someone stressed that high in a long time.
A few hints for this assignment:
- the goal of this assignment is to pan with the car, to make the car clear and the background blurry.
- a relatively slow shutter speed is needed (1/80th to 1/125 is a good range to experiment in)
- if your camera has continual focus adjustment mode, this helps a LOT, but it is not mandatory
- the panning motion is best done if you fix the upper body stiffly and swivel at the hips/torso, not the shoulders/head.
- The basic technique is to follow smoothly from one side to another. I like to take a picture when it is about 1/2-way through my "swivel" (my body's most comfortable or natural position at that point in that arcing movement), and follow through even after the shot is taken.
- if you are having issues, set the camera to manual focus, prefocus it on a known area and when following through with the shot, press the shutter when the car enters the area of best focus. Having a deeper field of vision helps (like an F/5-F/8 range), but this shortens the shutter speed so you could compensate with raising ISO or zooming in or out, depending on the situation.
- this kind of shot/technique works best on bright days, but though harder to do, can be done in darker conditions.
One could exercise the mechanics of the movement without taking the picture... try it out:
Place your feet about shoulder width apart, twist torso to the left, lift camera to eye, concentrate on NOT twisting the head, and twist from one side to the other smoothly and slowly. Lightly increase speed after doing about 5 pans in each direction.
This conditions the mind and body to the mechanics of the movement and it becomes instinctual the more you do it. The more you do it, the smoother and more natural the movement will become as you practice. Suddenly when you are out there doing it "for real", the movement becomes natural and easy... leaving you free to concentrate on setup, composition and photo acquisition.

Click the Insert Image icon. Thats the icon that looks like a yellow square with a mountain in it. :)
As for the practice assignment, you have the concept down for #3,, but #2 is the tough one. I think with one of the practices you've reversed rolls. Make the roller boarder clear as a bell and blur the scene with motion blur... thats what will happen when you pan with the guy and use a slower shutter speed.
This can be one of the toughest assignments in the course if you don't practice often. Panning is tough at first!
#4 is oddly enough the easiest. Go somewhere where it is dark and take a long exposure (several seconds), and have one or more people move through it.

Go somewhere where it is dark and take a long exposure (several seconds), and have one or more people move through it.
mmm...i dont quite understand what you mean - i did try to have the background blurred with the skateboarder clear, and i think i did that well...the third one is reversed, with the skater blurred and the background clear. is this not what we were supposed to do? have i misunderstood (as usual, hahahhaha) again?
thanks for the comments anyways - oh and telling me how to get the pictures attached! honestly - i have been posting on this forum since december i think and still not figured it out!!!

Yes Janine you did both of those. That is what it said to try in the assignment. I like how the skateboarder is clear in the first, but the second photo shows the motion!!! It looks like he is going really, super fast.

janine if you use photobucket (its a free photo hosting site) you can upload your pictures there and it will have codes under the pictures and just copy the bottom code (image code) and past it in your forum. that is the easiest way for me to do it big :) hope i helped. but i really like your skateboarding shots the first one is cool. i still havent had a chance to really practice yet i live on a dead end road so not many cars go by and taking two kids out to take pics is crazy right now lol. but good work

Can you all take a look at the photos I will attach below and see if I have the panning exercises down pretty good.
About the best one to my eyes in a fast look was this (http://proudphotography.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=973&d=1215999752) one:
It has some background blur and the car is nice and sharp. This is the hardest variation of the set of exercises to do.
Panning is not something that I could do very well, but after a lot of practice and going once with a friend to a race track and I was much improved.
The best technique that I found was having a stiff upper body and swiveling at the lower torso. Much smoother and more controlled a movement.
Well done! :)

Jerry,
Thanks for the response, I really had a great time working on these shots but not having fun right now as I forgot to put on sun block and have at least a 2nd degree low 3rd degree burn on my left leg and probably mild 2nd degree burn on my right leg. In total I took 291 photos Sunday. 100 was fast shutter, 25 were auto shots and around 165 were slow shutter shots. I had to play with the settings between 1/1600 and 1/2000 which made it too over exposed and if I went 1/1250 they were too dark. I even had the exposure compensation at -1/3.
The other side of the track I tried around 1/60 which I saw alot of the people here use and it was too over exposed and 1/125 was still slight over exposed but gave the effect I was looking for.
