That all depends on how much you want to spend Len...Photoshop is one of the top programs but its also one of the most expensive. Lots of folks are going to Lightroom, a bit cheaper and some get by extremely well with Photoshop Elements....it does a lot that Photoshop does at a lot cheaper price. You can download trial versions of all of these and try them out before you buy them. I'd start out with Photoshop Elements and try it for the 30 days. Then, if you think you need more options, download the Photoshop and try it for 30 days.
There are quite a few free programs out there...http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbasedwin/tp/freephotoedw.htm
this site list the top 10 of them.
Hope this helps!

A good meal is not produced by high priced utensils, it is produced by a fine cook.
Even the pros are doing 80% of their work in LightRoom. It is a program that took me a while to warm up to but once I did, I started to zip through a lot of the features faster than in Photoshop.
In the end, though, if you do get serious about your photography, at some point, you will purchase Photoshop. Look for deals.![]()

Hi there - I have just downloaded (free one with no limitations and no trial period) a program called Photo Scape. It has a lot of features but will not allow 'touch-up' (well I haven't found it yet)using brushes etc. but for free isn't too bad. My wife has Paint Shop Pro 9 on her computer and does some amazing work with it and got it off ebay nice and cheap. It may take a while to work out how to do things, but there are plenty of tuts for it on the web apparently. Hope this helps?
I love you guys!

GIMP is also a free photoshop "look-a-like". Not as good as the real one, but for the price, no one can complain. I totally forgot about this one till today... sorry.![]()

Hi Treetop another program that you might consider is Paint Shop Pro Photo X2; this covers the needs from beginners to advanced users. I keep it in my tool box of software.
This is the site www.corel.com if you register with them you can download the demo, it costs between £75 an £80 for the full version and you can get it of the shelf at PC world or after downloading the demo buy a code from the Corel site which unlocks the demo into the full version. But as mentioned above it all comes down to how much you want to do with your photos and how much you are prepared to spend.

Tree... I'm new to ProudPhotography and have been out of the net, so to speak, for
the past several weeks. My mother-in-law battled brain cancer and finally passed
away June 4th. Sad, but she's out of pain and in the presence of God now.
Regardless, if I may, I bought LightRoom2 a month ago and started messing with
it's controls... with only the instruction found on YouTube. Here's the result of
simply messing around with a photo I took in 2004 with a Kodak camera. Again,
I'm clueless of the programs capabilities at this point, but I can't imagine what it's
true potential is after months of use.

Doug - I am very sorry to hear about your MIL. Joseph and I were wondering if things were all right with you and yours.
I too have LR2 and just haven't taken the time to "play". I keep saying that I will just have to force myself to take the time to learn LR, but we all know what happens with time.
