    Prime lens 1.4 or 1.8

I'm looking to buy a new prime lens but not sure which one I should get :s

    Its between the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens and Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4G.

I was wondering if anyone uses these lenses and would provide any advice as to which one would be best.

    Thanks

Re: Prime lens 1.4 or 1.8

I've owned the 1.8 and tested the 1.4. Obviously the most expensive one is the best, however what is more important to you is budget, level of expertise, what camera you own and intended use.

If you are just starting out, the 1.8 is more than adequate. If you have the budget, are a more serious amateur or a professional, then the 1.4 is the one to get.

Have you done any research yourself, done searches on the internet and looked up reviews and what others say about each lens? If not, I would suggest that you start with that.

Re: Prime lens 1.4 or 1.8

I too have owned ans used both these lenses. I still own and use the 50mm f1.8 (Mk1) which is a great prime for the money and the amount of time it gets used per year it certainly worth having in the bag. If budget is not a problem the 50mm f1.4 is a super lens..

PS I also use an OLD 85mm f1.8 (MF A1) that can give superb results via adapter on my Canon cameras..
I use Canon & Nikon gear. Remember the Camera is only a tool that lets you capture the light, it is blind with out us to see. Always use the best gear you can afford and make the lenses good ones

I don't know if this helps or not but the 1.8 will not autofocus on the D5000.

The new 35mm F/1.4G is supposedly an AMAZING lens. However, its a little more $$$ than the 50mm F/1.8... lol

depends on what your shooting, if you need the speed invest the extra money for the 1.4
